Every hour we spend sitting without movement is like paying a small “health tax”… you might not notice it at first, but over time it adds up.

Investing in an ergonomic office chair is only one way to support your body. It’s equally important to build small habits that keep you moving and help mitigate the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.

It’s hard to ignore how our modern lifestyle revolves around sitting: working at our desks, commuting in cars or on buses, eating meals, and unwinding in front of screens. Our bodies, however, weren’t designed to stay idle. Like a car left parked for too long, when we sit for hours without movement, our systems start to lose their charge. Our muscles start to stiffen, circulation slows, and energy levels drop.

In this blog, we’ll be discussing the following ways to incorporate healthy sitting habits into your everyday life.

Finding the Right Office Chair

Ergonomic Desk and Chair Adjustments

Movement and Taking Breaks

Correct Sitting Posture

Footrests

1. Find the Right Chair

If your body were a high-end sports car tuned for optimum performance, the right office chair is like having air in your tires. Sitting in the wrong chair is like driving with low pressure; you might still move forward, but every mile (or hour) adds wear and tear.

LIFEFORM® Chairs are designed with high-end ergonomics to counter that strain. They feature adjustable lumbar support, contoured seating, and customizable options that help your body stay aligned and comfortable throughout the day. With the right chair, your system stays fluid and can keep performing at high speeds for longer periods of time.

2. Ideal Ergonomic Desk and Chair Adjustments

Another key factor in maintaining healthy sitting habits is ensuring your desk and chair are adjusted to the right height. Just as a car needs precise alignment to drive smoothly and avoid uneven wear, your workstation needs to be properly “tuned” to your body. Follow these adjustments for the perfect ergonomic workstation:

Align your desk. Set your keyboard height so your elbows stay relaxed at about 90–110°, your forearms are level (or slightly down), and your wrists are neutral.

Adjust your chair. Sit so your feet rest flat (or on a footrest) and knees are around 90–110° for stable support.

Lift your view. Position your monitor so your eyes naturally fall on the upper third of the screen (the top at, or slightly below eye level) to reduce neck strain.

When everything is in alignment, you reduce unnecessary strain on your back, neck, shoulders, and legs. Having your chair and desk set up for success is the first step to encouraging posture, but it takes a mindful effort as well to stay supported.

3. Take Frequent Breaks

Posture is one thing, but just like a car that’s left idling too long, your body needs to move to stay in good working condition. Taking regular breaks to stretch, stand, and walk around is like running the engine to keep all pistons firing, parts lubricated, and systems functioning smoothly. These movement “tune-ups” help improve circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, and prevent the kind of stiffness and strain that build up when we stay parked for too long.

Try some of these movements to stay healthy during your workday:

Move with every call. Stand, pace, or walk while you talk. A simple habit that keeps energy and focus flowing.

Add a burst of strength. Try quick, guided exercises like AHA’s Strength and Balance or 10-Minute Workout Anywhere to recharge your day.

Keep resistance close. Store light hand weights or a resistance band at your desk for simple movements that build strength and improve posture.

Think on your feet. Turn informal meetings or brainstorms into walking sessions. Movement fuels creativity.

Elevate your workspace. Alternate between sitting and standing with a sit-stand desk. Keep posture, comfort, and movement in balance throughout the day.

4. Keep Good Posture

With the support of your chair and desk tuned to your specific body type, posture is the final key to your steering alignment. This intentional posture while sitting can help reduce back and neck pain, improve breathing, and prevent long-term damage to your spine. When everything is positioned correctly, you have better control, balance, and efficiency.

When sitting in your LIFEFORM Chair, let the adjustable lumbar support act as your suspension system, absorbing pressure and keeping your spine in its natural curve. Keep your shoulders relaxed, your chin slightly tucked, and your spine stacked with each vertebra in line with one another. Now you’ll stay comfortably “in the driver’s seat” of your health all day long.

5. Invest in a Footrest

For those who find it difficult to maintain good posture, a footrest can be a valuable addition to your setup. Just as a car needs solid traction to stay steady on the road, your body needs a stable foundation to stay properly aligned. A footrest helps keep your feet flat and supported, improving balance, posture, and circulation while reducing pressure on your lower back. It’s a small adjustment that makes a big difference in how smoothly your “ride” feels throughout the workday.

Incorporating healthy sitting habits into your workday is essential to maintain your physical and mental well-being, especially if you’re spending a lot of time sitting at a desk. By using a LIFEFORM Chair and following the tips outlined above, you can create a comfortable and supportive work environment that will allow you to sit comfortably for extended periods.

If you’re looking for a chair that can help you maintain healthy sitting habits, look no further than LIFEFORM Chairs. With our ergonomic design and adjustable features, you can sit comfortably and work efficiently without sacrificing your health.

We’re proudly Canadian, built in Calgary, crafted by hand, and our story reaches back to Denmark in 1884. Those roots still guide how we design, stitch, and finish every ergonomic office chair today.

Precision in the Bloodline

If our legacy were a tree, the seed was planted by Jacob Mortensen in Durup, Denmark. His family made handmade saddles where fit, balance, and pressure relief are everything. That same obsession with alignment and materials are the roots of LIFEFORM® to this day: start with the right ingredients, shape to the body, and build to last.

As markets modernized, Jacob’s sons evolved the workshop into the Durup Upholstered Furniture Factory, still family, still meticulous. In 1957, Jacob’s grandson Kai Mortensen brought that craft ethos to Calgary, Alberta, where it took firm root in the cowboy capital of Canada.

Our Calgary Workshop

By the 1970s, the Mortensen craft was thriving in Calgary under Kai’s roof. Johnny Mortensen, Kai’s son, and John Kristensen, Kai’s brother-in-law, were working as craftsmen in Kai’s shop, refining their skills on custom residential pieces. In 1976, Johnny and John ventured out on their own and founded what would become LIFEFORM Chairs.

LIFEFORM began with made-to-order sofas and chairs until a request for a leather high-back executive chair changed our course. That commission became our blueprint: elegance shaped for function, and function elevated by craft.

Designing for the Way People Work

By the 1980s, computers reshaped daily work. Chairs looked the part but rarely supported the body. We set out to build seating that did both. Early LIFEFORM designs introduced sculpted contours that cradle the user, plus intuitive adjustments, armrests, lumbar, and tilt, so each chair could be tuned to the person, not the other way around.

Refinement, Not Mass Production

Through the 1990s, we honed our silhouettes and expanded options, task and guest chairs among them, while doubling down on what mass production can’t do, personalize. As imports flooded the market, we moved in the opposite direction: deeper customization, richer materials, and a refined fit for the individual.

Innovation, Layered into Craft

In the 2000s we continued to integrate thoughtful technologies without sacrificing feel: temperature-regulating finishes, breathable mesh backs paired with our upholstered comfort, and adjustable seat depth to encourage healthy posture during long workdays. Every innovation is chosen to enhance the handmade foundation, not replace it.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-22356 aligncenter" src="https://lifeformchairs.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/LF-UltimateExec2Chairs_envir_c_t.jpg" alt="From saddles to seating Two luxurious brown leather executive chairs, one high-back and one mid-back, are showcased in a classic, elegant office setting.
Why Tradition Matters Again

Fast design is wearing thin. People are curating fewer, better pieces, and objects with story and staying power. Our workshop approach means your chair is made for you: measured, specified, and finished to reflect your body and taste. It’s the opposite of one-size-fits-all.

Handmade, Then Tailored

We think like tailors. Your chair is built to measure, with options in upholstery, stitching, detailing, and fit, because comfort is personal and taste is individual. The result is architectural and intimate, a tool that serves you quietly all day and ages with grace.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-22357 aligncenter" src="https://lifeformchairs.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Brand-story-Quotes-blog.jpg" alt="From saddles to seating A close-up shot of a craftsman in his workshop, with his hands resting on a piece of tan leather furniture.
Ergonomic Office Chairs are a Craft

Ergonomics at LIFEFORM isn’t an add-on; it’s embedded. Contoured support, adjustable features, and thoughtful materials work together to reduce pressure points and promote healthy posture. Now you can focus longer, with less fatigue, and feel better when you stand up.

An Office Chair for Life

We don’t cut down our tree of tradition, we grow it. From saddles to seating, five generations have taught us that lasting comfort begins with honest materials, meticulous construction, and respect for the body. That’s why we like to think of our operations as a workshop-studio, everything we make is shaped by hand, guided by heritage, and built for your life.

With limited breaks, artificial light, constant distractions, and hours sitting in front of a screen, it’s easy to see how burnout happens both mentally and physically. On top of that, the chair you’re sitting on was mass-produced in a factory, designed to be affordable and only somewhat comfortable for the average person.

The problem is, you’re not average, you’re unique, and sitting in a chair designed for someone else isn’t helping your health or focus; it’s actually doing the opposite. The wrong chair can create poor posture habits leading to further discomfort, distraction, and even long-term health problems.

So if you’re looking for a new chair, the first step is to change your perspective. Instead of viewing an office chair simply as a place to sit during work hours, see it as an investment in your health, productivity, and general well-being.

If your workspace were a football team, and the goal was comfort and productivity, your chair would be the quarterback.

The question is, which chair do you choose to take you to the endzone? With every player on the bench claiming they have the best office chair, it can be hard to decide. Despite all the noise, one thing is certain: whether you’re tall, petite, or somewhere in between, the best office chair needs to be personalized.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the following factors to consider when choosing the best ergonomic office chair:

Body type

Posture

Comfort

Durability

1. Your Body Type: The Foundation of Comfort

As the title of this blog suggests, your body type is the most important thing to consider when it comes to finding the right office chair.

Think of your chair as you would your runners or football cleats: a shoe that’s too big and you’ll be floating around and have to adjust how you move, making it awkward and uncomfortable; a shoe that’s too small and you’ll be squeezed and pinched in pressure points. Similarly, if you pick a chair that’s too big you’ll be awkward in your positioning/posture. If you pick a chair that’s too small, you’ll be crammed which will create discomfort and distraction.

If you want to play at your best, the wrong sized equipment won’t only hold you back but will lead to long-term pain; an office chair is no different. Here’s how your size and shape should influence your chair choice:

For Taller Individuals: Look for a chair with a higher backrest and adjustable seat depth to ensure ample legroom and neck support. Opt for models that offer adjustable lumbar support to accommodate a longer torso.

For Petite Individuals: A chair with a lower seat height and a smaller backrest will help prevent discomfort compared to an office chair that’s too large and overwhelming. Make sure you can adjust the seat height and armrests so your feet remain flat on the floor for optimal circulation.

Weight Consideration: Select a chair with a weight capacity that exceeds your own. This ensures the chair can provide proper support without compromising comfort or longevity. At LIFEFORM Chairs, we have a weight limit recommendation of up to 350lbs.

A chair that aligns with your body type and dimensions is the first step to creating a fully customized ergonomic workstation. Just like a pair of perfect fitting football cleats, the right size keeps you in control of your comfort and focus.

2. Posture: Chair and Body Communication

A quarterback needs to have a clear communication with the rest of the team, to call plays and make successful passes. Your chair uses its specific ergonomic features to communicate with your body too. The right features in a chair will tell your body to stay in alignment, relieving you of slouched shoulders and a hunched neck. Correct posture is key to avoid long-term health consequences and to reach the comfort-focus endzone.

Here are the features to look for in an office chair that supports good posture:

Lumbar Support: Choose a chair with built-in lumbar support that can be adjusted to fit the curve of your spine. This support is crucial for preventing lower back pain and maintaining a neutral spine.

Seat Depth Adjustment: The right seat depth ensures that your hips are in contact with the back rest and that there is a small space between the edge of the seat and the back of your legs. This encourages a correct pelvic tilt, upright posture, and improves circulation.

Adjustable Armrests: Armrests that adjust to your height and keep your arms at a neutral level helps reduce shoulder strain and a rounded back. Not to be overlooked, this simple feature can make a significant difference in comfort throughout the day.

A chair that communicates with your body and supports your posture effectively can help reduce fatigue and prevent musculoskeletal issues. With these ergonomic features in place, your quarterback will be at the top of their conference.

There’s just a few more items to address before the team is ready for the Super Bowl.

3. Comfort: Soft AND Supportive

A football player’s protective gear needs to be soft enough to move fluidly, but hard enough to support and protect the player under impact. A well-designed office chair is no different; it needs to cushion your body without being so soft that it lets you sink into more poor sitting habits.

Here are some features to look for when shopping for your next chair:

Padded Seat and Backrest: Look for high-density foam or memory foam padding that contours to your body, providing relief from pressure points while you sit. A memory foam seat cushion that is soft but supportive will protect you from sit-bone pain, nerve pinches, and will allow circulation to flow naturally. If a seat is too soft, it will collapse under pressure, and you’ll feel the chair frame at the bottom after long-term use.

Our SmartCore Seating Technology is a two layer system, a high-density foam covering the frame to prevent bottoming out and to provide support, and then our proprietary LIFE-Foam™ memory foam layer on top to provide softness, reducing pressure on your sit bones and joints. It’s like sitting on a cloud.

Recline Feature: A tilt mechanism that allows you to recline or shift positions throughout the day can help prevent stiffness and promote better circulation. Some chairs even have adjustable tension, so you can control how much resistance you get when leaning back.

Headrests: If you often find yourself leaning forward or experiencing neck strain, a chair with a built-in headrest can provide much-needed support to reduce neck and shoulder pain. An adjustable headrest option is a great addition to a mid-back office chair model.

Ultimately, the more comfortable your chair, the longer you can work efficiently without distraction or discomfort. But remember, long-term comfort doesn’t just mean soft; it also means supportive.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-22334 aligncenter" src="https://lifeformchairs.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lifeform_Summer_2022-0_FPO.jpg" alt="Modern home office setup featuring a height-adjustable wooden desk with a mounted monitor arm, keyboard tray, and accessories including a lamp, clock, mug, and essential oil diffuser.
4. Durability: Quality That Lasts

Last and definitely not least is durability. A top quality football player needs to have a long-term mind set. Without longevity, their legacy is short lived and their team will have to find a new quarterback, setting them back years of progress.

When we look at an office chair as an investment, it’s important to choose one that will stand the test of time. A high-quality chair can endure years of daily use without compromising its comfort and structure, ensuring you meet your goals with minimal hiccups and replacement players along the way.

Here’s what to look for in a durable office chair:

Sturdy Materials: Look for chairs built with precision steel mechanisms, reinforced bases, and premium upholstery that resists wear over time. High-quality materials, from performance textiles to heavy-duty casters, ensure your chair delivers comfort and reliability for years, not months.

Don’t forget, the best performing players aren’t cheap…you get what you pay for.

Warranty and Support: Reputable manufacturers offer warranties on their products, ensuring that you’re covered in case of defects or malfunctions. Always check for a warranty before making your purchase.

Each part of a chair plays an important role. A reliable manufacturer will help you make appropriate replacements when parts reach the end of their lifetime.

Eco-Friendly Options: Many modern office chairs are designed with sustainability in mind, using recycled materials and environmentally friendly manufacturing practices. Opting for eco-conscious chairs not only benefits your comfort but also the natural environment and local communities.

Quality chairs are built to last. When building your team, make a wise investment that pays off in the long run, saving you from making a new purchase every few years.

A Custom Office Chair is the Perfect Office Chair

You wouldn’t pick a quarterback for your team from a catalog, so why would you for your office chair? Instead, look for the features and customizations that align with your unique needs and body type.
