Our Foundational Story: A Rich Heritage of Craftsmanship
The Mortensen family saga begins with Jacob Mortensen in Durup, Denmark, in 1884, where he established his own saddle making and upholstery shop. This legacy of craftsmanship was carried on by his sons with the Durup Upholstered Furniture Factory, and further expanded by Kai Mortensen, who immigrated to Canada in 1957. Kai continued the family tradition by opening his upholstery shop in Calgary, laying the groundwork for what would become LIFEFORM® Chairs.
The tradition was carried forward in the 1970s by LIFEFORM®’s founders, Johnny Mortensen and John Kristensen, who ventured into the furniture business with Kamor Furniture Ltd., initially supplying residential furniture to Interiors by Kai Mortensen. The 1980s saw a shift towards commercial seating, culminating in a focus on ergonomic office and boardroom chairs in the 1990s.
